Cross-Train to PLC-5 from SLC-500 Using RSLogix5 Software

 


This one day, hands-on technical workshop is specifically designed to:

• cross-train plant maintenance personnel who are already familiar with the Allen-Bradley SLC-500 hardware system to the hardware of the larger PLC-5 system
• cross-train plant maintenance personnel from the RSLogix500 software package used for the SLC-500 to the RSLogix5 package used for the PLC-5


The following topics will be presented through hands-on exercises and demonstrations:

• Comparing the hardware of the SLC-500 system to the hardware of the PLC-5
• Comparing the principal features of the RSLogix500 and RSLogix5 software packages
• Comparing the SLC-500 data table structures to those of the PLC-5
• Using Block Transfers to communicate with intelligent I/O modules; both integer and BT-type control blocks
• Using configuration screens for intelligent I/O modules such as 1771-IFE, 1771-OFE2, etc.
• Wiring and processing analog inputs and outputs such as 4-20mA and other common instrumentation signals
• Comparing numeric formats of analog signal data between the SLC-500 and the PLC-5 systems
• PLC-5 I/O addressing; two-slot, one-slot, and half-slot modes and the use of the octal numbering system
• setting the PLC-5 DIP switches for processor and chassis configuration
• Configuring the PLC-5 communication channels for DH+, Remote I/O, etc.


This course will be conducted as a laboratory workshop using the Problem/Solution method of instruction. There are absolutely no transparency projectors and no PowerPoint slide shows involved. Instead, all of the course material is presented through a series of hands-on exercises which each student performs on real-world equipment. By working through the same types of tasks which are commonly encountered in the field, students not only master the material more rapidly but also improve their problem-solving skills and develop the confidence required to apply their new abilities on the job. Most students, particularly those with a maintenance technician background, respond enthusiastically to the challenges of this dynamic style of instruction.

Students successfully completing this course will be awarded 0.8 Continuing Education units.

This workshop is specifically targeted toward plant maintenance personnel who are proficient with the SLC-500 family of controllers but have little or no experience with PLC-5 systems. By comparing the two hardware platforms and concentrating on their similarities and their differences, this one-day cross-training workshop achieves much the same results as longer, traditional classes which focus exclusively on the PLC-5. Enabling students to apply their existing knowledge of the SLC-500 family allows this class to greatly accelerate the process of learning the skills required to troubleshoot and maintain systems controlled by PLC-5s.

In order to provide each student with an individual workstation and with adequate instructor attention, the class size is normally limited to six students.

It is required that each student have a good working knowledge of the Allen-Bradley SLC-500 family based on the RSLogix500 software package. Each student must also be competent in using the SLC-500 system to process common (4-20mA, etc.) analog instrumentation signals.

It is required that each student have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and also adequate mouse and keyboard skills to enable active participation in the lab exercises. Although the pace of this workshop will not accommodate students who lack these skills, we offer a separate one-day hands-on computer workshop to provide these prerequisites.
